Garuda Indonesia named after a legendary flying creature, Perusahaan Penerbangan Garuda Indonesia (PPGI) is the national aerial carrier of this South East Asian country. It is based in Soekarno- Hatta International Airport located in the capital city of Jakarta.
PPGI also has hubs that can be found in Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, Balikpapan’s Sepinggan International Airport, Medan’s Polonia International Airport and Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport.

History Garuda Indonesia started in the latter part of the 1940’s when the country gained independence from the Dutch colonizers. After years of achieving societal freedom, January 26, 1949 was distinguished as the founding date.
Douglas DC-3 was the first craft of PPGI which was dubbed as “Seulawah” in Acehnese, meaning “Gold Mountain.” Such mode of transportation was purchased at a sum of 12, 000 Malayan dollars.
The 1960’s was a period of abundance for Garuda Indonesia Airlines (GIA) . The fleet consisted of eight Convair 340’s, three Convair 440’s and eight Convair 240’s. Then later, three Convair 990’s and three Lockheed L- 188 Electrawere were added to the growing flotilla. Soon after, PPGI opened a route that can now serve guests who wish to fly to Hong Kong landing in the runway of Kai Tak International Airport.
