Letter: Now’s The Time to Quit Smoking

The month of November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the Great American Smokeout. There are two basic types of lung cancer, non-small cell and small cell.

The most common lung cancer risk factors are tobacco smoke and second-hand smoke (being the highest preventable factors), radon, asbestos, family history and occupational exposure to cancer-causing agents.

Discuss prevention and detection with your physician. Americans could prevent about one-third of all cancers by not using tobacco. Pretty amazing statistic. Did you know that smoking-related diseases remain the most preventable cause of death today? There have been 4.8 million premature deaths attributed to smoking last year alone worldwide.

Smoking accounts for 39 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Smoking causes more than $167 billion in annual health-related economic costs. Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different cancers.

The American Cancer Society has a free telephone-based tobacco counseling service, the quitline, available by calling 1-800 ACS-2345. If you still use tobacco, make a plan to quit on Nov. 19, the day of this year's Great American Smokeout.

Go to www.cancer.org and visit the quit center with tools, newsletters, activities, cigarette cost calculators and more. Also, get active in a tobacco campaign. To find out how we're fighting against tobacco in your area, visit www.acscan.org and select Oregon from the drop-down menu on the left side of the screen.

  1. While not perfect e-cigarettes only give you the nicotine and not all the other 4000 chemicals. And therefore are a much healthier alternative.
