Tubuh manusia secara alami memproduksi kolesterol, namun jumlah yang dihasilkan sesuai dengan genetika. Terlalu banyak kandungan kolesterol juga tidak baik bagi kesehatan.
American Heart Association seperti dilansir Dietslnreview.com menyatakan, kriteria kandungan asupan kolesterol dalam tubuh bila kurang dari 200 miligram/dl dianggap sehat. Sedangkan 200-239 mg/dl adalah perbatasan cholesterol tinggi, serta 240 mg/dl dan di atas adalah tingkat cholesterol sehat.

Berikut adalah lima makanan untuk menurunkan kolesterol:
- Oatmeal and Oat Bran: Kandungan serat yang penting membantu memerangi kolesterol yang tinggi. Oatmel mengandung serat yang dapat memecahkan kolesterol.
- Kenari dan Almond. Jenis kacang ini mengandung polyunsaturated fatty acids yang dapat membantu menghancurkan kolesterol.
- Ikan dan Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Jenis ikan ini mengandung di antaranya salmon, makarel, dan tuna memiliki kandungan omega tiga yang dapat menyehatkan hati dan menurunkan ke kadar kolesterol.
- Olive Oil. Ini mediterania diet yang menyediakan antioksidan yang rendah kolesterol LDL. Konsumsi Olive oil direkomendasikan setiap hari.
- Makanan yang mengandung sterols dan stanols yaitu zat yang ada dalam tanaman yang dapat membantu memblokir penyerapan kolesterol. Makanan yang termasuk dalam jenis itu di antaranya margarine, air jeruk, serta yogurt. Selain itu, makanan lain yang baik untuk menurunkan kadar kolesterol adalah buah-buahan, sayur-sayuran, kacang-kacangan, biji-bijian, dan kacang.
